US on the défensive

This past May 11, the United States presented its report to the Human Rights Council, in Geneva. « Many countries have decried police brutality, spying, racial discriminations and death penalty. » (…).

 

During the first Universal Periodic Review, the US followed the procedures but did not provided the expected advances on substantive issues, according to Antonio Genatta, Human Rights Watch advocacy director for the US. « This US shows litttle progress compare to its commitments during the first UPR cycle ».

Human Rights Watch - an NGO – stated that many promises made by Washington during the 2010 UPR first cycle did not materialize. At the time, the US agreed with 171 out of 240 recommendations made by other countries but many of them were not put into practice. »
