Human rights to be included in school curriculum

« Moves are afoot to include human rights as part of the school curriculum following a recommendation by the Human Rights Council of Sri Lanka (HRCSL).

Director General of National Institute of Education (NIE) Prof. Abeyrathna Bandara told The Nation that the HRCSL had come forward with certain proposals in order to include human rights in the school curriculum and added that they were in the process of formulating a system through which the subject could be implemented.

Commissioner of HRCSL, Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa earlier said that the initiative was at its initial stages. “We have sent a set of proposals to the National Institute of Education on including human rights into the school curriculum. We have begun discussions on the issue,” he added. Prof. Bandara, however, stated that the proposals submitted by the HRCSL would not be implemented in its entirety. “It will not be as a separate subject. We already have a subject called civic education for students from grade six to eight. We hope to include human rights as part of that subject,” he said. The NIE is in the process of discussing changes that would be made to the syllabuses for grades six and nine next year. “We will be making the syllabuses next year. So we hope to include human rights as part of civic education,” he added. »
