Algeria : educational issues on trade unions agenda

The second summer university of high school and vocational training teachers union (Snapest) was held in Jijel from the 17th to the 20th of august. The main theme focused on « Solidarity with people in struggle ». But discussions on the issue regarding « quality education through out the world » will continue on the fifth of october in Paris and New York, as suggested by Education International.

According to Mr. Meziane Meriane, Secretary general of the union, « the apprenticeship of democracy, the respect of the values we share, the introduction to cultures paving the way to world citizenship and the learning of tolerance are notions which youth should assimilate for building awareness in and outside school. We need to build a society in which our young ones will have the right to full participation and shall develop an understanding of the world around them ».

When asked about proposals which should be applied in Algeria, he recalled that many suggestions have been made among various trade unions bodies during regional consultations held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and that it was time for the supervisory authorities to call a national meeting in a view to implementing the recommendations which have been made - and this for the very beginning of the academic year.
